Network Technician 1 or 2, UCP 3 or 7

The Connecticut Education Network (CEN), operated by the UConn Information Technology Services, is seeking an energetic and self-motivated individual to join a team supporting advanced network solutions in a medium-sized Internet service provider environment. CEN is Connecticut’s Research and Education network, whose purpose is to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable high-speed Internet access, data transport, and value added services to its members throughout the state. Under the direction of a designated supervisor, this position independently plans, implements, and operationally supports advanced network systems for CEN. It is intended for individuals with intermediate knowledge of network systems, skills in software development and automation to drive increased precision, agility, and operational excellence. The position operates out of the main office in Hartford, CT, and is expected to travel to connected sites throughout Connecticut and affiliate sites in adjacent states as needed.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assists with ensuring the continuous, uninterrupted availability and functionality of the CEN.

2. Resolves complex network problems and responds to emergency network outages/repair requests within targeted response times.

3. Manages system logs, monitoring data, including applications programming for reports.

4. Manages timely response to service requests, incidents/troubles, and events within the centralized service management/ticketing systems.

5. Creates, Updates, and maintains as-built documentation.

6. Contributes, maintains, and executes business continuity/disaster recovery plans as needed.

7. Provides training/knowledge transfer to staff colleagues and/or students.

8. Helps design and implement network systems including physical and logical topology.

9. Creates, debugs, tests, and deploys network automation scripts and programming languages.

10. Tests and recommends for purchase network hardware, software, and service products.

11. Work occasional mornings, evenings, and/or weekend hours as needed. Participate in on-call rotation responsibilities as required.

12. Contributes to technical specifications and procurements documents.

13. May maintain vendor relationships, manage contract installations, service contracts; provide escalation and liaison services between vendor and end users.

14. May travel to various service sites within Connecticut and New England.

15. May direct or supervise one or more full time or student staff members.

16. Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science (BS) in an information technology (IT) related field or equivalent combination of training and experience.

• 1-2 years programming experience, which includes working directly with network systems.

• Demonstrated ability to work well with people, handle technical problems, and work well under occasional extreme pressure.

• Good verbal communication and writing skills.

• Professional level experience with MS Office products.

• Demonstrated knowledge of network hardware and software.

• Ability to travel to multiple locations for work.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for the rank of Network Technician 2

• 2 -5 years network related experience, which includes working directly with large-scale network systems.

• Very good verbal communication and writing skills.

• Demonstrated understanding of OSI Layers 1 – 4 and TCP/IP protocols.

• Ability to demonstrate strong network troubleshooting skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated scripting ability utilizing one or more of: Bash, Python, Perl, TCL, Ansible, Javascript, ShellScripting, etc.

• Experience with LAN and WAN protocols in an enterprise networks

• Experience with MS Visio and similar programs

• JNCA or CCNA level certification level or better, with preference in route/switch or service provider tracks.

• Advanced knowledge of DNS configurations and troubleshooting

• Support for server applications on both Windows and Linux platforms

Additional Preferred Qualification for the rank of Network Technician 2

• Master’s degree in a technical or 5 years’ experience in an enterprise network environment

• Demonstrated ability leveraging MySQL, MariaDB, Docker, and/or GitHub

• Experience with optical networking systems including CWDM and DWDM

• Experience with routing protocols including OSPF, BGP, and/or MPLS

• Experience with IPv6

• Experience in understanding Multicast

• Experience with web filtering, associated regulations and technologies

• Experience with VMWare and/or Hyper-V in a server environment

• Experience with outside plant fiber optic cabling systems

• Experience with the design and implementation of large-scale network systems.

This is a full time, annually renewable (end dated) position.
